For most riders over 60, the 3G Cardio Elite RB X is the recumbent bike to start with. Its low frame lets you walk in instead of swinging a leg over.
3G Cardio fits the seat to riders from 5 feet to 6 feet 5.
A recumbent bike puts you in a chair with a backrest, with the pedals out in front. If an upright bike seat hurts, or climbing onto one feels risky, this is the shape to look at.

The three bikes, at a glance:
- 3G Cardio Elite RB X: the only stated rider height range of the three, a reclining backrest, 350 lb.
- Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB420031: a seat stated for an inseam from 26 inches, for shorter riders.
- JOROTO JH50: JOROTO rates it to 400 lb, the highest here, and ships it almost fully assembled.

3G Cardio describes a low step-through center frame. The seat moves through 25 positions forward and back, plus 5 tilt positions. It is the only maker of the three that gives a height range for its seat.
At 49 inches long, it is shorter than the Sunny, which Sunny lists at 57.1 inches. It weighs 115 lb and has front transport wheels and a rear lifting handle.
3G Cardio lists a lifetime frame warranty with 7 years on parts.
- Great if
- A seat that slides and tilts, a mesh backrest that reclines, 16 resistance levels
- Pass if
- There is no wall outlet near where it will stand: it plugs in

Sunny Health & Fitness SF-RB420031 Recumbent Bike + Mat
Step-through design
Inseam 26 to 35 inches, 265 lb limit

Sunny states a step-through design and a seat that slides for an inseam of 26 to 35 inches. If your feet do not reach the pedals on most bikes, that 26-inch end is the number to check.
It has 8 resistance levels rather than 16. A beginner starts at the lowest level on any of them. The bundle includes a floor mat that goes under the bike.
- Great if
- A seat that adjusts for a leg reach as short as 26 inches
- Pass if
- You weigh more than 265 lb: that is Sunny's stated limit, the lowest here

You need a weight limit above 350 lb

JOROTO rates the frame to 400 lb and describes a wide step-through space for getting on. It arrives 95% assembled, by JOROTO’s account, so there is little left to assemble.
JOROTO does not publish a seat range or a user height range. If you are much shorter or taller than average, ask the seller for the seat range before you order.
- Great if
- 16 resistance levels and a tablet holder for following a class
- Pass if
- You want to check the seat range first: JOROTO does not state it

What to check before you buy any recumbent bike

The words “for seniors” in a listing tell you nothing on their own. These four checks do.
- The frame. Look for “step-through” in the maker’s own description. Some recumbent bikes have a bar you must lift a leg over, and a listing photo can hide it.
- The seat range against your own leg. Stand against a wall in socks and measure from the floor to your crotch: that is your inseam. Compare it with the stated inseam or height range.
- The user-weight limit. Choose a bike rated well above your weight, so the frame is not working at its limit every ride.
- Where it plugs in, if it does. Some consoles run on batteries and some need a wall outlet. Check before you pick the corner it will live in.
Worth paying for: a seat that slides on a rail and a backrest you can lean into. Those make a longer ride more comfortable.
Not worth paying extra for: an app subscription. Each of the three has its own console that shows your workout, so an app is an extra.
Your first two weeks: minutes, not miles
Set the resistance to the lowest level and pedal for 5 to 10 minutes. You should be able to talk while you ride.
Add a few minutes each week rather than more resistance.
The National Institute on Aging is the US government’s research agency on aging. It advises older adults to build up gradually to at least 150 minutes of moderate aerobic activity a week.
A morning ride while the coffee brews counts toward that total, and so does a second one after dinner.
You should be able to talk while you ride.
The NIA’s safety note says aerobic exercise should not cause dizziness, chest pain or pressure, or nausea. If it does, stop and rest.
This is general information, not medical advice; check with your doctor if you have a heart condition or concerns.
Why a recumbent suits so many older riders
A systematic review looked at 47 studies in people aged 60 and over. It described stationary biking as a safe, non-weight-bearing form of exercise well suited to that age group.
The recumbent shape adds two things an upright bike does not have: a backrest, and a seat close to chair height. You sit back instead of balancing on a narrow saddle.
When you may not need a full bike
If getting onto any bike is the hard part, a pedal exerciser you use from your own chair may suit you better. Compact seated exercise pedal machines sit in front of an armchair and need no step-over at all.
If your knees or hips are sore, read up on how to exercise safely with joint pain before choosing.
The bike to order for your height and weight
Most riders between 5 feet and 6 feet 5 and under 350 lb will be well served by the 3G Cardio Elite RB X.
Shorter riders whose feet struggle to reach the pedals should look first at the Sunny SF-RB420031. Riders above 350 lb should choose the JOROTO JH50, after asking the seller about the seat range.
Whichever you choose, start with 5 to 10 easy minutes on the lowest setting.
